Translation and words

How to read the result: tabs, colors by word type, particles and copying the original.

After each scan, the side panel shows the result in two tabs: Translation and Words. At the top you always see the crop you analyzed, with its language and how long it took.

Translation tab

  • Original: the text the OCR recognized. The copy button puts it on your clipboard, handy for looking it up in a dictionary or saving it to your notes.
  • Translation: the full translation. Next to it you see what produced it: Chrome · local in local mode, or the model name in Hybrid and Image to API.
  • Notes and literal translation: in Hybrid and Image to API, the model adds notes about expressions, register or context, plus a translation closer to the original. In Local you'll see a dashed card with a Turn on button that takes you to pick one of those modes.

Words tab

Shows the original sentence with each word underlined in the color of its type, and the word list below it. Each word comes with:

  • The word in its original script.
  • Its reading: kana for Japanese, pinyin for Chinese and romanization for Korean.
  • Its meaning in your target language.
  • Its type, as a colored label.
  • A star to save it to My list.

The word breakdown works in all three languages and in every mode. In local mode, segmentation and readings are computed in your browser.

Colors by word type

TypeColorExamples
NOUNBlue天気, 什么
VERBGreen食べる, 干
ADJECTIVEOrangeいい, 好
EXPRESSIONMagenta哎呀, 괜찮아
NAMEYellowNames of people or places
PARTICLEGrayは, の, 的, 이

Proper names get their own color and aren't translated word by word: 小明 shows up as “Xiaoming”, not “little bright”.

Hide particles

Particles (は, を, 的, 은…) show up in almost every sentence. Check Hide particles to remove them from the list and focus on content words. In the sentence above they stay visible, with a dotted underline.

Saving words

  • Click a word's star to save it. Saved words get a yellow border.
  • Click Save all to save every word in the sentence at once.
  • The star button at the bottom of the panel also saves them all.

Saved words go to My list, where you can export them to Anki.
